The N17 project will see the earthworks and surfacing teams working together as one. The contract entails the full rehabilitation of the shoulders and reconstruction of the base course with an asphalt overlay over the entire road. The base course will be reconstructed with a cold in-situ recycler to construct an ETB (emulsion treated base).
The latest technology asphalt pavers and rollers will be utilized and a total of 21 000 ton of asphalt will to be laid during this 18-month contract.
Effective traffic management will play a large part in both this and the project on the N2, with a stop-go scenario being implemented (3 closures of 4km each at a time). One side of the road will be completed first - the shoulder will be reconstructed, then the base will be reconstructed and finally the asphalt will be laid on top. The whole process will then start again on the other side of the road.
